Project LKCaleidoscope was started in 2024 by a group of students passionate about capturing memories and the stories they hold for the people close to us. We aim to meet the emotional needs of palliative care patients and their family as they journey through the difficult end-of-life journey by immortalizing their memories with loved ones through photography. Our main beneficiaries are palliative care patients and their families from various healthcare institutions in Singapore.

Our main initiative centers around providing pro bono photoshoots and printing out hard copy pictures for the patients and their families. These photoshoots are supported by our makeup and hairstyling team and befriending team that uplifts the experiences of the patients and their families.

Lunar New Year Photoshoot at Dover Park Hospice

Earlier this year, LKCaleidoscope collaborated with Dover Park Hospice to organize a Lunar New Year–themed photoshoot for the day care patients, conducted over two days. As part of the session, student volunteers helped patients with makeup and hairstyling, and we also provided outfits, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We were grateful to receive support from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Singapore, which kindly contributed clothing from their thrift store for our photoshoots.

In addition to individual portraits, many patients requested photos with their family members or friends from the hospice. Some of these photos have also been chosen by the patients' family members as their funeral portraits.

After the photoshoot, we printed hardcopy photos for each patient and provided photo frames so they could display their pictures. To make the experience more personal, we included a photo frame–decorating activity, offering art supplies for patients to customize their frames. As volunteers guided them in choosing decorative pieces, we had the opportunity to connect with the patients more deeply and share meaningful conversations throughout the activity.

Photoshoot at Assisi Hospice

LKCaleidoscope also organized a photoshoot for the day care patients at Assisi Hospice. The outdoor setting of this shoot brought a touch of vibrancy and greenery to the photos, creating a warm and lively atmosphere. Props were provided for patients to take fun and casual photos together, making the session more enjoyable.

Conclusion

As a new initiative, LKCaleidoscope aims to continue capturing meaningful memories for palliative care patients through photography, while exploring new and creative ways to expand our impact. Moving forward, we hope to extend our services to more hospices and increase our capacity to offer family portraits for patients with poor prognoses. In the long term, we also aspire to broaden our reach beyond patients in geriatric settings, ensuring that more individuals can preserve and celebrate their most cherished moments.
