Established in 2018, we work to empower those affected by the sex-trafficking trade in Kolkata, India, where the largest red light district in Asia is located.

ABOUT US

Background

Since our inception in 2018, Project Kolkata has aimed to support the women and children affected by sex trafficking to the best of our abilities through our partnerships with various NGOs. As our members comprise medical students and staff, we aim to tap on our skills and knowledge to make healthcare more accessible for our beneficiaries.

Our Vision

Project Kolkata was established as a commitment to stand in solidarity with these communities and help address their urgent, intertwined needs. With compassion, humility, and a shared determination to make a difference, we seek to learn from them and contribute to building a healthier, more just world.

Partnerships

We conduct annual health screenings and health education programmes in collaboration with locally-based partners such as Touch Nature and Tollygunge Women In Need. We share a common vision with these NGOs, working tirelessly to improve lives through holistic, community-based approaches. We also conduct workshops like art therapy, dance, and science camps for the various groups of women and children that we meet!

We continually seek to expand our network and work with local organisations that are able to reach different red-light areas to increase both the focus and scope of our impact. In 2025, we seek to partner with Project GRL, a medical van providing health screening and services to those in red-light districts.

Our Efforts

During the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising the deepening vulnerabilities and the significance of ensuring continuity, Project Kolkata launched an online fortnightly English tuition programme for the children supported by Touch Nature. This has continued since and become a medium through which we are able to form lasting bonds with the children as well.

Beyond the fieldwork in Kolkata, we look forward to our annual fundraiser, Kolkata Khristmas, in which we sell original merchandise as well as products created by the women from Touch Nature.

Seeking to expand our efforts to serve the community in Singapore, we are working with Saint Andrew's Migrant Worker Medical Centre to conduct health education programmes as well.
